The Sheldrick Animal Orphanage is an organization that raises orphaned animals before releasing them to the wild. While we were there, we saw a baby black rhino (9 mos. old) and four baby elephants. Each animal is assigned a caretaker, who actually becomes a mother to the animal, as they are with it 24 hours a day. Yes, they even sleep with the animals. It was amazing to see the way that they responded to their caretakers, not seeing them as humans, but really as their mothers. They would follow the caretakers wherever they went, the caretakers would feed them milk from a bottle, and the provide them with leaves to eat, just as their elephant mother would have. Once the animals are old enough, they are released into the wild. Many return to the shelter on a regular basis to visit.
